Rope workers redundant
PA Auckland Donaghys Industries, Ltd, is laying off 30 rope workers at its Auckland plant. The company is calling for voluntary redundancies before making any compulsory lay-offs. The group manufacturing manager, Mr Dennis Kemp, said from Dunedin: “We are reducing hard-fibre production in Auckland and increasing it in Dunedin and so will have to drop 30 Auckland staff.” “Our sales have dropped a
little but the decision to rationalise was made before that. We need to replace equipment and at today’s prices and interest rates we cannot afford it for our Auckland and Dunedin plants. “We want to remain competitive, especially with C.E.R. coming up.” The 160 staff at the Stanley Street factory are being offered the standard redundancy pay under the Government Wage Freeze Regulations.
