Treatment of P.M.T.

Sir,—l would like to correct two errors in the article, “Advocate for natural treatment of premenstrual tension” (February 21). First, my research in Edinburgh revealed that levels of hormones in women with severe premenstrual changes in their, moods and physical health were no different from those, of women who do not experience premenstrual tension. Claims that P.M.T. is caused by low progesterone levels' in the weeks before menstruation are used as a basis for giving women costly, and possibly risky, hormone treatments. Since there may be no rational basis for such treatment, my research interests are to consider alternatively, non-drug remedies. Second, no-one is carrying on with my work in the psychology department, as the article claims. One of the diploma students is carrying out an independent investigation of yoga and mood. — Yours, etc., DIANA J. SANDERS. Research psychologist. February 22, 1983.
