Soviet psychiatry
Sir. — It is not enough that Bridget Steyn (February 21) "knows of 80 men and women by name who are in pyschiatric hospitals, prisons and prison camps for being wholehearted followers of Jesus Christ," she must have substantial concrete proof of such charges. I know that Mrs Steyn does not have such proof, nor any first-hand knowledge of the charges which she lays against the Soviet Union, so I shall not challenge her to provide it. There are many Christians in the Soviet Union, members of the Russian Orthodox. Catholic and Lutheran churches, as wholehearted followers of Jesus Christ as Mrs Steyn's list of 80 names, who affirm the reality of Jesus Christ without suffering persecution. I am too familiar with the slanderous charges peddled by Soviet dissidents to be impressed by Mrs Steyn's list of 80 names.- — Yours, etc.. . M. CREEL. February 22, 1983.
