Potatoes
Sir,—Your correspondent Janet Holm (February 22) should equally congratulate the potato industry for the Consumer survey was a combined effort with the Potato Board financing the purchase of the lines by the institute and paying the fees of the graders employed. A study of the results shows a majority of the defects attributed to either the growing or marketing sectors came from unidentified packs. Over the years the Potato Board has pressed the Government to introduce compulsory grading and recently regulations ensuring identification either by the grower’s registered number or the packer's name in the case of pre-packs. Let us hope that this exercise will stir our friends on "The Hill" into action. In the meantime the message should be to purchase only clearly labelled and identified potatoes.— Yours, etc.. R. G. CHAMBERS. Methven, February 23. 1983.
