Govt will try for pairs
PA Wellington The Senior Government Whip. Mr D. C. McKinnon(Albany), has said that he would apply immediately Parliament opened on April 7 for pairs for Government members overseas at the time. Mr McKinnon said that members of both sides of the House would be absent when Parliament began. Some would be on a Parliamentary tour in the Pacific Islands
and Australia. "I would expect the Opposition to grant these pairs." he said. The Opposition had often said last year that it would take a stricter look at applications by the Government for pairs, he said. Such statements tended to suggest that the Opposition spent all of last year "on automatic pilot” and did not run as vigorously as' it declared, he said.
