Admiral’s call
NZPA Washington A retired United States Navy admiral. Noel Gayler, yesterday urged the United States and the Soviet Union to dismantle most of their economic atomic '"eapons, declaring that nuclear force was inherently genocidal. Admiral Gayler, who once served as a nuclear war strategist for the Pentagon, said that Washington should announce that it would never
initiate the use of nuclear weapons to stem a conventional Soviet attack. “It is not possible to avoid killing non-combatants'in the thousands and tens of thousands,” he said. “Nuclear weapons have no military usefulness." he said. But he noted that each super-Power would have to keep some nuclear weapons as a deterrent.
