The group applies the disciplines of soil mechanics, soil physics, engineering geology, numerical modelling and agricultural science to rural slope stability problems. Current research emphasis is on interactions between water and soil or rock which promote weakening and ground instability. The Land Stability Group is well served by two laboratories equipped for soil mechanics, soil physics and pedological studies, and also includes an instrumentation section. Good computing facilities are available. Other groups at Aokautere conduct related research into remote sensing applications, plant growth and physiology, hydrology and land use capability. Intending applicants should have a good honours degree and preferably a Ph.D. in a related field.
