Arrest after gun found
PA Auckland The police last evening arrested a man and charged him with the murder of Mrs Carol Pye and Mr Martin Crossley at Titoki, 30km west of Whangarei. Detective Inspector Peter Ward, who was heading the inquiry, said late last evening that the arrest followed the discovery of a rifle and cartridges believed to have been used in the double killing. Inspector Ward said that the rifle was found in a stream and the cartridge cases on grass at the rear of the couple’s property. Yesterday the police interviewed an unemployed Whangarei man. aged 34.'He was arrested and charged about 10.30 p.m. Inspector Ward said the man would appear in the District Court at Whangarei this morning. The woman's body was found by her son. aged eight, when he and Mrs Pye's two other young children returned home from school in the mid-afternoon on Tuesday.
