Well-bred sheep sell well at Oxford

Heavy Romneys and Coopworths and well-bred station lines of Halfbceds had the best of the Oxford ewe fair yesterday. Little interest was’ shown in light sheep, particularly in the adult section where many lines were passed in. Although prices overall for two-tooths were back on those paid at last year's fair, the drop was not as great as at recent fine-wool breed sales in North Canterbury. Some breeders yesterday received about $lO less a head than last year, but others were paid similar prices. The quality of the yarding was mixed. The well-known breeders presented their sheep in very good condition.

Several well-bred lines of Romneys were bought by buyers from the West Coast and other support came from Ashburton and local areas. A buyer from Southland bought several Halfbred two-tooths.

The top price was $30.60 received by J. U. McCracken (Haylands) for a pen of heavy Romney two-tooths. Mr McCracken, who topped the market last year with $42.50. sold four other pens of Romneys at $l9 to $23.20.

K. M. Wells (Moana Downs) had a consistent sale, receiving from $22.80 to $26 for four pens of Romneys. A. H. and L. F. Blatch (Pineview) sold one pen of Romneys at $25.

Coopworths from J. D. McLaughlin (Glengarry) sold from $20.60 to $22.40. and J. H. Scott (Ohoka) had sales at $22.20 and $20.20. A pen of Perendales from W. F. Ashe (Mountain View) made $2O. Gibson Brothers (Snowdale) sold an excellent line of wellgrown Halfbred two-tooths at $24.40. and R. H. M. Johnston

(Ashley Gorge, sold Halfbreds to $l7 20. Prices of up to $16.40 were received by A. M. SpencerBower and Sons. iClaxby, for Halfbreds. Because of a lack of excess feed in North Canterbury, many lines of light annual draft ewe's failed to attract a bid Buyers concentrated on ewes showing plenty of condition and a good mouth. Good sheep had a ready sale from $l2 to $l7. but buyers showed no interest in poor sheep. Some sales were made under $5. K. M. Wells received $16.60 for an attractive line of five-year Romneys, compared with $22.50 last year. Birch Hill station (Glentui) sold four and five-year Perendales to $l6. and the Lands and Survey Department (Okuku Pass) received $15.80 for a line of five-year Halfbreds. The yardings were 9542 twotooths (10.515 last vear) and 11.411 adults iT0.413). ’ Sales included: Two-tooths Dalgety New Zealand. Ltd. sold on account of: J. U.
