Petition planned to save house

Amid mounting opposition to the planned retirement complex at Bishopscourt. Cr Helen Garrett has announced that she will lead a campaign to block the proposal. Cr Garrett said yesterday that she would hold a oublic meeting and organise a petition calling for the preservation of the 56-year-old budding. the formal residence of the Bishop of Christchurch, the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt. She will raise the issue at the next meeting of the Christchurch City Council and will seek a meeting with the Church Property Trustees. the owners of Bishopscourt.

Cr Garrett said that she had decided to lead the movement to save the building and its grounds because a lot of people were angry about the proposed development.

“I think it is most important that the house be left in the proper relation to its surroundings.” she said. Other alternatives which did not mean “crowding the grounds" should be considered.

The plans as outlined by Bishop Pyatt last year provide for the building of 35 detached units round Bishopscourt.
