Peace group starts vigil

NZPA London Women peace campaigners began a vigil yesterday outside Holloway Prison, north London, where some of the 36 Greenham Common protesters are believed to be held. It is understood that they plan to remain there to give moral support as long as the women are in prison. A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "They have settled down for the night in their sleeping bags on the pavement. They are not causing any problems and the police have no reason to move them on." The 36 women have been jailed for 14 days after refusing to be bound over to keep the peace. Some of them sang songs in the court at Newbury, Berkshire. They were accused of unlawful trespass at the Greenham Common R.A.F. base in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace.

Defendants stood on chairs and sang protest songs. The case against them was found proved after a two-day hearing. Six of the 42 defendants agreed to be bound over to keep the peace for 12 months in the sum of LlOO. All the women, from the Greenham Common Peace Group, had denied any guilt, saying that their action had been aimed at keeping the peace and not breaching it.
