Record squid shipment
PA Nelson A record single shipment from New Zealand of 3000 tonnes of squid is due to leave Nelson on February 9 for Japan and Taiwan. The cargo is being loaded aboard the 3721-ton Hayashikane Maru No. 1 in direct ship-to-ship transfers from 21 Japanese and Taiwanese squid boats.
About 2500 tonnes is bound for Taiwan and the rest destined for Japan. The record shipment is only part of an estimated 5000 tonnes expected to be shipped from Nelson this summer, almost double last season's export tonnage. Six cargo ships will carry the catch of about 35 squid boats. Four have already sailed with at least one more due after the Hayashikane’s departure. Some New Zealand jointventure partners have attributed the bumper catch to a better season while others said it resulted from the fishing fleets arriving earlier and staying longer.
