Locomotives for Otira
Electric locomotives which have just been retired from the Wellington. Hutt Valley, and Paekakariki runs will be used as back-up power for the Otira Arthur's Pass section of the West Coast line. The first of the EW class locomotives entered service with Railways in 1952. They were designed by New Zealand Railways mechanical engineers and built in Britain by the English Electric Company. The EW locomotives have been replaced on the Wellington commuter service by new Ganz-Mavag units. One EW will remain in Wellington as a reserve in case of emergency and breakdowns.
