Custody remand on raid charge

A man charged with breaking and entering a New Brighton • jeweller's shop, from which property valued at' $BOOO was taken, was remanded in custody to February 25 when he appeared before Judge Frampton in the District Court yesterday.

Tony Nash, aged 20. unemployed (Mr J. B. Stringer), is charged with burgling the Brighton Mall premises oi Crescent Jewellers. Ltd. on February 14. and with unlawfully taking a car and a motor-cycle between February 13 and 14.

Nash did not plead to the charges. Bail was opposed by Sergeant M. J. South because of the seriousness of the charges. He said none of the property had been recovered, and the vehicles taken had been used in the commission of a “smash-and-grab" burglary. COMMUNITY SERVICE A divorced woman, who received $6780 in overpayments of her domestic purposes benefit by failing to notify the Department of Social Welfare that she was working, was sentenced to perform 120 hours of community work.

The Judge told Rahera Teaomania Teika, aged 36 (Mr M. J. Glue), that he accepted she had made a good job of bringing up her three children under most difficult circumstances.

Although the amount appeared substantial, the money had been used by the defendant for the bare necessities of living, said the Judge.

Teika had admitted and been convicted on a charge that between December 26. 1980. and October 15. 1982. she wilfully omitted to advise the department of a change in her circumstances in that she was working as a part-time cook. 1042 SEEDS A labourer found in posses-

sion oi 1042 cannabis seeds told the police that he was "a reasonably heavy smoker" of cannabis and that he had accumulated the seeds over the last two years, said Sergeant South. ’ Michael Pelecudis. aeed 21 (Mr S. G. Barker), who admitted unlawful possession of the seeds, was convicted and fined $125. The Judge said that it was the defendant's second drug offence. BURGLARY OFFENCE A man. who admitted breaking into a Cecil Street house told police he was tired of watching his black and white television set and wanted a colour set. said Sergeant South. Peter Awatere. aged 36. unemployed (Mrs D. J. Orchard), was convicted on the charge of burglary, and also with being found in possession of instruments by night capable of being used to commit burglary. The defendant was remanded on bail of $l5OO to March 4 for a probation report and sentence. Sergeant South said that at 3.30 a.m. on December 29 police received a call to say a person had broken into a house in Cecil Street. The area was cordoned off and Awatere was found inside the house. A colour television set. and other articles, were found stacked in the hallway. INDECENCY OFFENCE A man. aged 68, who admitted committing an indecent act on a boy. aged 11. was convicted and remanded at large to March 4 for a probation report and sentence. Sergeant South said that the offence took place on a riverbank on January 18. Both the defendant, who was represented by Mr P. R. Rutledge, and the complainant, had their names suppressed by the Judge.
