Factory to close
PA Tauranga Eighteen joinery workers will lose their jobs at the end of March when Carter Holt, Ltd, closes its interior joinery factory at Tauranga. The branch manager, Mr L. F. Simmons, said the company had done a lot of “soul-searching” but a severe downturn in the building industry had made it impossible to continue running the joinery business. The factory was geared to high-volume manufacturing and could not be run at 50 per cent of the normal volume of orders, he said. A rise in costs in spite of the price freeze had also influenced the decision.
