‘Fears groundless’

PA Wellington Fears that the Broadcasting Corporation would decide to rent Television One’s transmission facilities to private enterprise at less than an adequate commercial rental were groundless, said the chairman of the Broadcasting Corporation, Mr lan Cross, yesterday. The Government announced this week that it would call for private-sector tenders for the use of 37 hours of morning time on television. “I should think that anybody who has business delayings with the corporation i'n recent years would testify to that.” Mr Cross said. “We insist on a proper

return for the commercial use of the public assets which are our responsibility to administer.” Mr Cross was responding to the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Lange, who said on Thursday that he would legislate if necessary to ensure that proper fees were paid by private broadcasters for the use of public facilities. “The corporation has no doubt about its position,” Mr Cross said. "The final transaction will be a commercial one. So long as we are able to treat it as a deal between only two parties we will be quite happy. Public enterprise these days should not need any political cossetting in its commercial dealings.
