I University Vacancies THE UNIVERSITY OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA (Port Moresby) APPLICATIONS are invited from suitably qualified persons for the following positions in the Department of Agriculture:— PROFESSOR Applicants should have basic degree in Agriculture, a distinguished academic record, an active research interest in one of the Agricultural sciences, and a proven concern for other areas of agriculture. Wide University teaching experience and a broad knowledge of tropical agriculture would be of particular advantage. The University seeks to appoint a person who will provide strong academic leadership in curriculum development. in teaching and research and who can strengthen the role of the Faculty within the wider context of agricultural education and research throughout Papua New Guinea. CHIEF TECHNICAL OFFICER IN AGRICULTURE Applicants should have a recognised qualification in Laboratory Technology, and experience relevant to laboratory work in an academic institution. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in agricultural or biological sciences. The appointee will be responsible for the organisation and administration of teaching and research laboratories of the department and for the provision of full technical services to teaching and research staff. In addition, the appointee will be required to design and implement an active training programme for National Technical Staff. Duties wil also include over-all supervision of budgeting, purchasing of equipment, and control of stores and supplies. SALARY SCALES Professor. K2L960 per annum plus gratuity. Chief Technical Officer. K 17.010 per annum plus gratuity. OTHER' CONDITIONS OF SERVICE The successful applicant will be offered a contract for a three-year appointment unless otherwise specified. In addition to the salaries quoted above, the main benefits include: a gratuity entitlement based on 24 per cent of salary earned payable in instalments or lump sum, which is taxed at a flat rale of 2 per cent, support for approved research: rentfree accommodation; appointment and repatriation airfares for appointee and dependents; financial assistance towards the cost of transporting personal effects to and from Papua New Guinea; 6 weeks annual recreation leave with home airfares available after each 18 months of continuous service; generous education subsidies for children attending schools in Papua New Guinea or overseas; a salary continuation scheme to cover extended illness or disability. Appointments for up to one or two years may be arranged. Applicants who wish to arrange secondment from their home institutions will be welcome.
