The U.S.N.S. Southern Cross is expected to leave McMurdo Station for Lyttelton tomorrow on her last round trip before the onset of the Antarctic winter. It was feared that bad weather and the disintegrating ice wharf at McMurdo might make it too dangerous to work the supply ship, but off-loading had already been completed, said the executive administrator of New Zealand affairs with the United States Naval Support Force. The United States Coast Guard icebreaker Glacier also acted as a “bridge.” The Southern Cross is nowloading. If the weather holds, she is expected at Lyttelton next Thursday, before returning to the United States via Panama. * ♦ * The Hawke's Bay Harbour Board's tug Maungatea is on her way from Napier to go into the Lyttelton Dry Dock for her annual survey. The 251-torr tug is expected to arrive on Monday. Also due to go into the dry •dock this week is the Timaru Harbour Board's suction dredge. W. H. Orbell. for a lengthy survey which is expected to take about a month. Small-boat forecast Today's inshore marine forecast from Lyttelton to the Waimakariri River mouth was for smooth seas and a slight easterly swell, with northeasterly winds of 15 to 20 knots later in the day.
