(By W. S. HARRISON, vice-president of the Canterbury Master Builders and Joiners Association). No activity that man is involved with has more history or more tradition than the building industry. When man began to gather sticks and stones to build a protective wall across the entrance to his cave he became a builder. He discovered the usefulness of timber and clay. The use of these basic materials has become traditional. People will accept change and progress in most things around them — aviation, and electronic communications are just two instances of amazing progress. But those.same people still prefer their home to be of traditional bricks, mortar and timber. Change and progress are occuring in the building industry — but within the confines of tradition. Joiners have seen considerable change during the past 20 years. The use of aluminium extrusions to make windows and doors for the external walls and then room dividers and wardrobes meant he had to learn new skills or lose this work to others. In more recent years, the emergence of the specialist kitchen manufacturer has posed another challenge to the joiner. Once again, he has had to learn new skills and acquire new machinery or lose even more of his traditional work. Specialist kitchen manufacturers have given us another important change, the influence of women in the industry — women as designers, as consultants, as sales people, as managers. Kitchens are planned and produced by women for women. No longer can the builder be blamed for poor kitchen planning when professional advice is available as part of the design service.
