Demolition crews hit hovels

NZPA Cape Town South African Government demolition crews guarded by armoured cars had knocked down about 550 squatters shacks yesterday to wreck a black shantytown, witnesses said.

Sporadic stone-throwing began as crews sent by the Government moved onto the site, on the edge of the Guguletu township, about 16km east of Cape Town. The crew’s first sweep had demolished about 200 shacks, mainly pieces of plastic stretched over tree branches and boards.

One black man, aged 20, had been shot in the stomach after trying to steal a bus during the skirmish, but was not seriously wounded, the police said. Under South African law, blacks must live in tribal homelands unless they have permits to live in black townships in white urban areas, where black housing is always in short supply. Squatter's camps are demolished periodically.

The police fired tear-gas on Wednesday to disperse a tense crowd of squatters, and several buses, cars, and official vehicles were stoned.
