Chairman named for clean air hearings
Parliamentary reporter A former chairman of the Clean Air Council and director of the Meteorological Service. Dr J. de Lisle, has been appointed to hear objections to the. extension of the clean air zone in Christchurch.
The proposed extension will cover areas administered by the Eyre, Heathcote, and Paparua county councils, the Kaiapoi and Riccarton borough councils, and the Waimairi and Rangiora district councils. The central city area has been covered by a clean air zone since 1977.
A clean air zone allowed for the control of domestic smoke, said the Minister of Health, Mr Malcolm. There was a ban on the installation of open fires in new dwellings, which might contain only approved heating appliances. There were also restrictions on the type of fuel which might be used. Mr Malcolm said objections had already been received and Dr de Lisle hoped to hold hearings in Christchurch within the next two months.
