Emergency numbers
A Christchurch sauna lounge had too many callers last evening, but they were the wrong kind. Staff found . themselves answering calls from people wanting news of relatives who might have been endangered by the bush fires in Australia. After about the twelfth mistaken call, a check with the Post Office revealed the 4
cause of the mix-up. The sauna lounge’s telephone number corresponds with the first five numbers of one to an emergency station in Adelaide and people were failing to dial the full ISD prefix. The emergency telephone numbers were printed in a newspaper yesterday but the ISD codes were not given. "I suppose it was confusing for some people." said the ¥
proprietor of the lounge. "Most of them sounded quite alarmed with the answer.” The numbers, to be called only in an emergency, with the' ISD code in brackets, are: Adelaide: (00618) 2671188 and (00618) 267-4277. Melbourne:. (00613) 667-1801 and (00613) 667-1802. The telephones are manned by members of the Australian Red Cross.
