Surprise plant find

Plants thought to have died out 70 million years ago have been discovered high in the Tibetan Himalayas, the Xinhua News Agency reports. The plants, including tree ferns, the podocarpus yew. and other Mesozoic species, had been discovered by an expedition surveying 7756-metre high Mount Namjagbarwa in eastern Tibet last year, the agency said. The expedition from the Chinese Academy of Sciences had been surprised to find golden snakes and other subtropical species on the northern slopes of the mountain, when they were mainly found on southern slopes of the Himalayas, as well as alpine pines and oaks on the south side when they are normally associated with the northern side.—Peking.
