N.R.B. annoyed by illegal advertising

PA Wellington The National Roads Board has been told that it should take the law into its own hands and remove illegal advertising signs from beside State highways. The suggestion was made by the board's deputy chairman, Mr J. S. Thorn, after board members were told they did not have the legal power to remove the signs or prosecute the people who erected them. “It's a ridiculous situation where they can flout the law and get away with it because

of a legal technicality,” he said. The Chief Highways Engineer. Mr E. J. Burt, cautioned against such methods. An overseer had adopted such an approach in Wairarapa a few years ago. and had had his truck run off the road by an irate sign owner. The Director of Roading. Mr T. G. Shadwell, said the ability to prosecute hawkers for placing illegal, signs alongside State highways had been lost when the Police Offences Act was changed.
