Kaunda stands out in first leg at Oamaru
By
G. K. YULE
Kaunda has taken on a new lease on life in the last two months, with his four starts during the period resulting in two wins and two seconds. If he races with the same dash he should be more than a match for most in the Oamaru Handicap, the main race at Oamaru today.
Kaunda was narrowly beaten al Forbury Park last month, first by Kotare Hunter over 3200 m and then by Doctor Bailey over 2700 m. In both of those races he set most of the pace and it was late that he was run down. In his current form he looks capable of further wins. He will have to go a long way to find a weaker field than this one. a factor which should help him extend his sound record. Five of the other 12
runners raced at Addington Raceway on Wednesday. Ata Lord and Glen Lustre could be the pick of them. Risdon Lea and Faberge appeal most of the others. The latest consistent racing of Colonel Whiskers and Misty Del suggests that they should dominate the finish of the second leg. the McGregor Handicap, which will be run over 2600 m. Colonel Whiskers has had a win and four platings from
his last live starts, his most recent run resulting in a late charge for second behind Glen Reynolds at Forbury Park last' month. Misty Del has had a second and two thirds from her last three starts, one of them being a second, half a length from Kaunda at Washdyke on January 7. She deserves a win and must go close. Spinstar. Randall and Gold Rush appeal most of a mediocre remainder.
