Entries sought for wheat competition

Canterbury wheat fanners are again being invited to show their growing skills in the second 1.C.1. Tasman Wheat Competition to be held in the Lincoln district.

Prospectuses for Wheat 83 are going out to farmers throughout the province. Wheat 83 follows the successful Wheat 82 competition which drew 16 entries from Canterbury farmers. A ballot was held for the eight halfhectare plots available. This year’s competition is again being organised by the Crop Research Division of the D.5.1.R., Federated Farmers, Lincoln College, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Wheat Board and the North Canterbury Agricultural Merchants’ Federation.

Organisers hope to provide 10 plots for competitors. Last year the competition plots were on the Lincoln College farm, but this year they will be on a private property about three kilometres from the college, First prize for the competition, a $5,000 study-travel grant donated by 1.C.1. Tasman, is the same as last year, but there have been some minor changes to conditions of entry. One change is that a competitor in this year’s competition will not be able to compete again for five years. Competitors this year will be able to use agricultural contractors for all stages of the competition, except for harvesting. Second prize will again be a Protimeter Grainmaster

moisture meter, worth $5OO and donated by Max Chesire, Ltd.

First prize goes to the competitor showing the highest net profit from the plot, while second prize goes to the competitor showing the second highest net profit. The competitor whose grain scores the most points in the Wheat Research Institute’s test will get a trophy donated by the New Zealand Association of Bakers, and a cash prize from the Wheat Board.

Final results of the 1.C.1. Tasman Wheat 82 competition will be announced on March 3 at a function at Lincoln College, and will be published in the Farm and Station pages of “The Press” the following day.
