Dalgety expands grain facilities
Moves to maximise grain and seed processing productivity in Canterbury demonstrate Dalgety New Zealand, Ltd’s commitment to arable farming in the region, according to the company’s New Zealand arable manager, Mr C. T. Mortlock. Dalgety plans to spend nearly $500,000 on new storage facilities and machine improvements at its grain storage and seed dressing complexes in Canterbury. The upgrading programme at the Dalgety Prebbleton complex near Christchurch will be carried out progressively over a period of three years with the initial phase designed to increase machine capacity for peas, grain and ryegrass. Five 150-tonne silos will be constructed in the first year at a total cost of $179,000 while machine upgrading work worth $104,000 will be carried out in year one and $93,000 in year two.
The two-year Washdyke programme is designed to accommodate an increased seed grain and small seed product and involves the construction of a 2100 square foot storage shed. This is in addition to re-
cently completed expansion programmes at Dalgety’s Rakaia and Chertsey storage facilities. “Dalgety has been involved in Canterbury's grain and seed industry for 125 years and the current Can-
terbury programme is aimed at improving efficiency in an already highly developed operation,” Mr Mortlock said.
