Junior golf society comes alive

Renewed interest shown by young golfers has led to the resurrection of the Canterbury Junior Golfing Society, a body which has been dormant since 1978. An interim committee has been elected under the chairmanship of Neil Reid and a tournament for under-25-year-old golfers is planned soon. It is the intention of the committee to raise sufficient finance to send a team to the Booth Shield tournament in

Gisborne at Labour Day week-end. The Booth Shield competition is contested by provincial societies from. both the North Island and South Island. Through the efforts of Vai Cullen, the president of the Canterbury District Ladies’ Golf Association, a team of six men and four women attended last year’s Booth Shield contest in Nelson. It finished fifth. However, the South Island

had its first win for several years in the inter-island match which is played in conjunction with the Booth Shield. The Canterbury Society was formed in 1964 with the late Miss Eileen Nutt as president and such prominent golfing identities as Bruce Taylor, Mary Ensor, Sue Boag and Donald Hope on the committee. Interest waned to the extent that the society went into recess five years ago, but the present enthusiasm by young golfers has brought about its revival.
