Incubators to be replaced

PA Hamilton Six incubators in Waikato Hospital's unit for the newborn, including one in which a baby died at the hospital in September, 1981, will be replaced. The Waikato Hospital Board made the decision in a closed session. A coroner at an inquest into the baby's death early

last year asked that the incubators being used at the time be modified to ensure maximum safety. The three-week-old baby died when the Puritan-Ben-nett 2000 neo-natal incubator overheated. The coroner had said human error had been a key. factor. The board’s chief engineer reported that, because of various reasons, it was not

possible to modify the incubators as required. “Some aspects of the equipment were less than satisfactory,” said the board’s chief executive, Mr Gordon Davies, After the meeting. The six incubators had not been in use since November, said the hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr Alison Sommerville.
