District Court seizes vehicles
PA Wellington The District Court at Wellington has . begun seizing vehicles in an effort to collect more than $1 million in unpaid fines.
Seven vehicles have already been seized so far this week in a clampdown on large, outstanding fines. The court registrar, Mr Neil Cameron, said that warrants for seizing appeared to be an effective way of recovering fines. Towage and storage fees are added to the fine and prompt payment is apparently the norm when the warrants are issued.
Defaulting fine-payers are given an eleventh-hour opportunity to clean their slate before the warrants are actioned.
Vehicle-seizing warrants have long been a coercive practice available to the court, but in the past they have rarely been used. Only two were issued last year.
Mr Cameron said that each non-payment case was looked at individually, but where other methods failed the warrants would increasingly be used.
