IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM Al R NEW ZEALAND Over the next few days you are likely to find your plans to travel by air disrupted. This is solely due to a threat of industrial action by the Airline Stewards’and Hostesses’ U nion. This is a pity, just when there is renewed pride in the Airline and support for its recovery programme. What has happened? Following the dismissal of a number of ground stewards last year, the Union and the Airline reached a formal agreement in September and recorded it with the Department of Labour, that whenever a problem arose between the Airline and any of those dismissed ground stewards, each case would be referred to the Arbitration Court. The procedure has worked well in seven cases. Five people have been reinstated, and two cases referred by the Union to the Arbitration Court. Now suddenly the Union and its advisers want to back out of the September agreement. They are refusing to take one case to the Court. They don’t want it decided by the Court. Instead, they threaten disruptive industrial action. Against the Airline. Against you the traveller. This action is illegal. They are breaching the Industrial Relations Act. The agreed procedure is there. Why are they refusing to use it? Though the Union is placing itself outside the Law, the Airline is determined to act within it. Despite Union refusal to move, we have taken the whole matter to the Court, and we will abide by its decision. We hope the Union will honour its agreement and avoid unnecessary and costly disruption to you our customers. air new zeaLana DWMEM.442
