Turbocharged Tredia
Todd Motors, Ltd, of Porirua will introduce turbocharged versions of the 1.6litre Mitsubishi Tredia saloon and its stablemate, the new Cordia, a two-door sportshatch, which replaces the Mitsubishi Celeste, next Monday. This is a bold step to take at this time when the new car market is in a very depressed state, but Todd executives believe the turbocharged cars have the capacity to perform comparably with 2.5-litre cars, while operating costs will be maintained at the 1600 cu cm level in normal running. The Cordia is a smartlystyled and reasonably spacious close-coupled four-seater coupe with reasonable luggage accommodation. Apart from the turbo-charged version, which will retail for $18,168, Todd will also market two normally aspirated models, the Cordia GSL, at $15,168, and the GSL with automatic transmission, at $15,768.
The price of the turbocharged Mitsubishi Tredia
GSR will be $17,830. Apart from the automatic Cordia. all these cars are fitted with four-forward-speed gearboxes with sidewinders which enable the boxes to be changed manually between low and high ratios. This Mitsubishi system is known as Super-shift. When the Cordias and turbo-charged Tredia were appraised by motoring writers at Feilding last week, Todd executives announced that the substantial increases in the prices of the Tredia range were in the pipeline because of the hardening of the yen and the continued softening of the New Zealand dollar. Revised Tredia prices will be $13,769 for the Tredia GL (an increase of $774), $14,830 for the GLS (an increase of $870), and a similar increase for the automatic version of the GLS which will retail for $15,430 once older stock has been cleared. A review of the Cordia range and the turbo-charged Tredia will appear in this column next week
