Twilight cricket titles decided
East-Shirley and Riccarton won the men's and women’s sections, respectively, of "The Press" twilight cricket tournament. which finished at Hospital Corner on Monday evening.
East-Shirley had a comfortable win over St Albans in the final round and that gave it an unbeaten record over the 11 rounds. Damian D'Oliveira, who had an outstanding record in the competition, finished on a high note, making 37 retired and taking three wickets, as EastShirley cruised to a 39-run victory.
Old Boys' one-run win against Burnside-West University enabled it to take second place from Country, with St Albans dropping to fourth.
The final match between the front-runners. Riccarton and St Albans, decided the women's
competition in favour of Riccarton. which retained its title bybeating its rival by 20 runs. D'Oliveira and Mary Clinton (Riccarton) won the Lion Breweries "player of the day" awards, and the Canterbury Sports Depot's “personality” awards went to Peter Kennedy (Sydenham) and Sally Jones (Merivale-Papanui).
