Coalgate ewe fair prices satisfactory
Most vendors were satisfied with prices at the first Coalgate ewe fair yesterday.
Good two-tooths and annual draft ewes sold at values fully firm with recent sales and sheep in light condition showed a slight improvement on rates ruling recently at Addington market. The over-all demand yesterday was weaker compared with last year’s first Coalgate sale, particularly for adult ewes. Romneys and Coopworths made up the bulk of the twotooth yarding with demand from buyers being shared equally by the two breeds. Most of the buying power was local. The better Romneys and Coopworths sold between $lB and $2O, with the top price being $20.80 for a pen of 94 Coopworths from G. D. King of Hororate. Last year, Mr King received $23.20 for his Coopworths. W. R. Deans and Son (Darfield) sold two pens of Romneys at $20.60 and $2O, compared with their top price last year of $l9.
