Australian market
Australian share prices closed quietly mixed with an easier bias in further reaction to the coming election.
At 1500 o’clock the allordinaries index was down 2.0 points at 501.3, almost entirely because of a 4.3 fall in the all-industrials to 643.0. The all-resources was down just 0.1 at 387.1. Turnover totalled a light 9.2 M shares worth sAust9.6M as losses outnumbered gains 160 to 62, with 167 traded issues unchanged.
Falls were concentrated in the industrial sector among automotive, retail, light engineering, bank, and transport stocks, and in the resource sector among several market leaders. The firmness of the resource index, which fell 1.4 points in the first half hour, was attributable to the emergence at mid-morning of buying by bargain hunters of heavyweight miners,'most of which closed with modest gains.
Brokers said there was no apparent effect on trading after release at mid-day of results from the first opinion poll taken since announcement of the coming federal
election. The Gallup poll found that the opposition Labour Party led the governing Liberal-National Party coalition by 8.0 per cent.
