Top colonel sacked One of El Salvador's top Army commanders has lost his job. The country’s military chiefs said that Colonel Napoleon Alvarado, commander of the important sth Infantry Brigade had been relieved of his post and given an administrative job. No reason for his transfer was given but El Salvador’s Armed Forces are deeply divided over the conduct of the war against Leftist guerrillas.—San Salvador. Church refusal The Church of England has refused to relent on Britain’s law barring the Throne to anyone married to a Catholic. An attempt to get a motion against the ban debated at a session of the Church’s General Synod, meeting in London, was defeated overwhelmingly by a show of hands. The ban is enshrined in the 1701 Act of Settlement, passed at a time of strong anti-Catholic feeling in Britain, and was questioned by many Britons before Prince Charles married in 1981.—London.

He will take over in April with the rank of majorgeneral, succeeding MajorGeneral David Thorne as military commissioner. Brigadier Spacie is stationed at the Royal College of Defence Studies—London.
