Extra police ‘requested’
PA Wellington The Governor-General, Sir David Beattie, told garden party guests on Wednesday evening that he had requested the extra squads of police at this month’s Waitangi Day celebrations. Welcoming about 700 people to the party on the lawns, of Government House, Sir David said he wished to explain why there had been extra security at Waitangi. Squads of police launched a military-style effort to ensure security of the day’s event. The Governor-Gen-eral’s car was escorted by two lines of police in riot gear from his hotel to the Treaty House.
Sir David said he had asked for the extra security because of bomb threats last year.
