Early-season apples scarce

PA Nelson Early-season apples are scarce in shops. . Because of hail damage, the crop was only 70 per cent of the November estimate, said the Nelson regional manager of the Apple and Pear Board, Mr Tony Masters, yesterday. Nelson supplied most of New Zealand with earlyseason Gravenstein strains. Retailers in Nelson, Marlborough, and the West Coast had suffered less than those in other regions, Mr Masters said. About 2000 more cartons had been sold in the top of the South Island and the West Coast than this time last year, 4700 cartons compared with 2800 cartons last year. This meant fewer apples were available to other centres. “That's the way it goes. When you are short, people want more,” Mr Masters said. Only early-season apples were scarce. Over all, the crop was bigger than last season, he said.
