Impressive trial by Mel’s Boy

The Wellington Cup winner. Mel's Boy. looked sharp for the $20,000 Pan Am Mile on Saturday week, with a smart performance to win the main pacers heat at the Addington trials yesterday. The Majestic Chance entire broke early and added an extra 30m to his handicap. Settling back on the inner. Mel’s Boy improved a place or two along the rails at the 700 m and was trailing three back from the 400 m. Mark Smolensk! manouvred Mel's Boy through the inside of the pacemaker. Kotare Hunter, well into the straight, and he dashed home to win by a length, going away. Mel's Boy recorded a creditable 3min 22.5 s for the 2600 m. The leaders returned Imin I.ls for the last 800 m and 30.5 s for the final 400 m. Panair. which contests the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Ashburton on Saturday, had the trail to the straight and fought on for second, a head in front of The Sting, which was handy in the open over the last round. False Regal and Roseland Adover fought on wide out to finish next. Quiet Win broke early and was always back, finishing last. Streets Ahead, the winner of two of his last three starts, indicated he is holding his form for the third leg of the T.A.B. treble at Ashburton on Saturday, with a handy win in the C2-C4 pacers heat. After receiving a good run on the outer to the home turn. Streets Ahead ran clear and went to the line a length in front of Armbro Count and Stormborn. returning 3min 26.6 s (2600 m Red Poplar, a backmarker in the C 3 trot at Ashburton, was too good for four rivals off level marks in the C3-OC trotters heat after racing in the open. Prime Minister was responsible for a useful front-running win in his CO heat, winning by four and a half lengths in 3min 30.55, while Superior Chance’s brother. Supreme Chance.

showed speed to come from the back to win in 3min 32.65. Nakaia and Miss Louise impressed for coming engagements with wins in their respective heats. Tough Nut (2min 46.45). Alpha Aqua and Double Deck (2min 48.75). were respective winners of the two-year-old pacers heats over 2000 m. Countess Royale, one of the favourites for the R. M. Cameron Mobile Stakes for two-year-old fillies at Ashburton on Saturday, returned a satisfactory trial for her engagement 'by finishing fourth in the heat won by Alpha Aqua. The Lordship filly tangled early but soon recovered to settle four back on the outer. She ran on solidly for a close-up fourth after showing speed on the home turn and was not pushed over the closing stages. Mighty Me showed speed over the final 800 m in 58.6 s to win the three-year-old pacers heat. Fifth early, he dashed up wide to dispute the pace near the 800 m. ran clear at the 400 m, and won untested by three and a half lengths. Three trotters and pacers qualified and gained their tickets in eight early trials. Wave Length, a four-year-old Tiger Wave gelding from a half-sister to Vikki Cash, Quite Regal and Billy Bruce, trained by Malcolm Gillum, ran on best to win the trotters trial in 3min 39s (2600 m

He scored by one and a quarter lengths from Noble Advice (3min 39.25) and Advocaat (3min 40.65). Boltin Girl, a four-year-old Bolton Byrd mare, trained at Weedons'by J. T. F. Curragh, finished strongly from the trail to win her pacers trial over 2600 m from a stand in 3min 33.85.

Owhatta Lady, a three-year-old Lumber Dream filly from a half-sister to False Regal (imin 59.45). Bronze Regal and Newparks, was the only pacer to qualify over 2400 m. returning 3min 16.55. Trained at Belfast by John Vincent, Owhatta Lady led throughout. Boban’ish, a three-year-old

son of Lordship from the same family that produced Vedette, finished best from the trail for a narrow win in the pacers mobile trial over 2600 m. qualifying in 3min 29.25. Results:
