Girls outnumber boys at riding school

A reflection of the increasing number of women in racing, and as jockeys in particular, will be shown at the third South Island apprentices' school, which starts at Riccarton racecourse on Sunday. Thirteen girls and seven boys have enrolled for the school. Last year the course drew 25 young riders — 13 boys and 12 girls. The programme, run under the auspices of the Canterbury District Committee, will cover all aspects of

racing including riding techniques, the health of both riders and horses and shoeing. At the end of the course on Thursday, riders will take part in races and will sit an examination controlled by the school’s principal, Mr E. D. Matthews. Instructors are: General training, Mr J. C. Tomkinson; health, dieting and hygiene, Dr M. Kerr; veterinary care, Mr C; Murfitt; riding instructors, Mr M. Skelton and Mr R. McCann; raceday inquiries, Mr J. B. Craik.
