Toyota -G.M.?
Toyota and General Motors, two of the world's largest car-makers, are close to agreement on the joint production of Japanese-style small cars in the United States, according to Keith Stafford of the New Zealand Press Association. Negotiations are going smoothly and could be concluded soon, says Toyota's managing director, Yoshidate Fujimaki. The Japanese car industry is at present observing voluntary restraints on exports to the United States and the opening of a ToyotaG.M. plant would help the industry to maintain a strong position in the United States small car market in the face of protectionist sentiment among Americans. Meanwhile, the Ford Motor Company is considering setting up a plant to produce 300.000 compact cars a year in Taiwan. The car would be for export. The president of Ford Asia-Pacific Inc., of Aus-
tralia, Sir Brian Inglis, has had talks with representatives of the Taiwanese Government and has said that Ford would use components produced by the Japanese Toyo Kogyo company, in which Ford has a 24.7 per cent interest. Details of the plan have yet to be made public.
