Quicker coastal service
The coastal container ship Union Nelsoji will provide a weekly service between Lyttelton and Onehunga from later this month. A weekly link between the two ports was needed to cope with increasing demand from shippers for fast and regular services, said the chief- general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, Mr David Jury. The 4950-tonne Union Nelson, which is able to load containers at conventional berths with her three on-board cranes, was introduced' to the New Zealand coastal trade in April last year. She was the centre of an 18day industrial dispute on her first voyage. Since then the Union Nelson has run a fortnightly "Sealink" service between Lyttelton. Nelson. New Plymouth, and Onehunga. Under her new schedule she will leave Lyttelton every Saturday. arrive at Onehunga on Monday. then sail south, arriving back at Lyttelton every Friday. The Union Nelson will contiue to make fortnightly calls at the ports of Nelson and New Plymouth. ARRIVALS Union Lyttelton (6.30 a.m.). 7299. Wellington (U.M.S.).
