M.P.’s visit to South Africa

Sir,—With characteristic honesty, a National M.P., Mr Norman Jones, admits he owes his Parliamentary seat and 1590 majority to the infamous Springbok tour of 1981. The sad thing is that Mr Jones apparently sees this situation as a matter of pride rather than shame. The forthcoming visit to South Africa by Mr Jones and some like-thinking National Party colleagues can, perhaps, be viewed in the light of kite-flying for our next General Election. After all, if South Africa can win one election for Mr Muldoon's party, why not two? The weak reaction of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Cooper, to the proposed Jones boys’ tour (financed by South Africa) indicates that a single-issue General Election would be very much to National’s advantage, especially so in view of Labour's steadfast stand against support for apartheid, which remains unchanged.— Yours, etc.. R. L. PLUCK. February 8. 1983.
