Luckier than most

By

NEVIN TOPP

Jordan Luck, the lead singer of Dance Exponents, is in good spirits at the moment. Not even the fact that he had been informed of the interview 10 minutes beforehand seemed to faze him. H& was quite happy to talk by telephone. The band, now down to a four-piece, is riding a crest, with two successful singles and a third on the way. The new single, “All I Can Do<,” backed by “I’m Not The One” and “The Empty Bunk In The Bunkhouse,” 'is due for release at the end of this month.

The new single was recorded on an 8-track at Azimuth Studios. According to Luck, the single had gained a lot of support from Mushroctn Records, the band’s label.

”We had a lot more freedom to do what we wanted this time,” he said. Luck- said that the “All I Can Do” had a nice acoustic sound with a percussive feel. “Fgi Not The One,” was an old song, that those who went to the Hillsborough Tavern might recognise, and the ■other B-side song, “The 'Empty Bunk In The Bunkhouse,” was a throw-off at and western, he said, ringing a snatch over the telephone to prove his point.

A week was spent record-

ing “All I Can Do,” compared with a day for the last two single releases, “Victoria” and “Airway Spies.” The production was done by the band and their soundman, Ben Free. The proposed album had had a setback because of problems finding a producer. The band were happy with

New Zealand producers and studios, but the record company wanted a name producer. Luck said he thought the reason for that was to help push the album overseas. At Sweetwaters, Dance Exponents were luckier than most bands because they watched other bands for

three days, before going on stage. “We hadL a chance to get a feel of the atmosphere and also get sunburnt before we played,” Luck said. Dance Exponents have another chance at an outdoor festival, when they play at the Heat Rave festival at Woodford Glen this Sunday.
