Mafia head spends big in jail
NZPA-Reuter ' Naples The jailed Raffaele Cutolo. the head of one of the most powerful Mafia clans, spent 30 million lire (more than $NZ27,000) on champagne and other luxuries in one year in prison, an investigating magistrate has said. In a 600-page indictment of 151 suspected Camorristi (Neopolitan Mafia clans), the magistrate, Mr Gennaro Costagliola, said champagne w'as one of the top lines on Cutolo’s shopping list during the time he spent in prison between March, 1981. and April, 1982. He and 150 of his alleged Nuova Camorra Organizzata (New Organised Camorra) associates will be tried en masse at a date still to be fixed. They are accused of armed assault and being members of a criminal organisation.
