Oakley escaper gives himself up
PA Auckland An Oakley Hospital escaper. Clive Thomas Steven, waved down friends in a car yesterday and was persuaded to give himself up. . The Auckland police say that Steven met the friends by coincidence as he was waving cars down in Pah Road, Onehunga. about 5 p.m.
He had been the subject of a big hunt since escaping from Oakley Hospital at midday on Tuesday. Detective Inspector B. Matthews of the Auckland Central C. 1.8. said it appeared that Steven — oold. tired and hungry — wanted to give himself up. Steven, who had spent the night in the open in the Waterview area, walked across the city to the beach at Onehunga about 3 a.m. He spent most of the day there before walking to Pah Road, where he was trying to wave down traffic, before being seen by friends. It is believed Steven may have recognised their car. When Steven flagged down the car he was still in the clothes he was wearing when
he escaped
Mr Matthews said’Steven was taken from Oakley to the Auckland Central Police Station where he was interviewed. He was to be returned to Oakley last evening and according to Mr Matthews would probably not be charged. A decision oh that would probably be made today. As Steven parted company from his fellow escaper. Steven John Forsythe, soon after they made off, he was unable to give the police any detail of where Forsythe may be. Mr Matthews said Steven had made no contact with other people during his escape. Meanwhile all police patrols in the Auckland area are keeping a close watch for Forsythe, whom the police describe as dangerous. Forsythe, who is awaiting •trial on a charge of murder, is 165 cm (sft sin) tall. He has a scar on the left forefinger, another on the right lower leg and one on the stomach. He is of medium build, with brown hair and brown eyes, and is tattooed.
