Few upsets at women’s bowls titles
Just about all the favoured teams are through to postsection play in the fours at the Bell Tea national women’s bowls tournament in Christchurch. There will be 107 back in action today when three rounds will have the field down to 16 by tonight. The most notable name among the non-qualifiers was Nora Campi (Kamo), who, with the same team she had this year, won the title in Christchurch in 1979. Mrs Campi needed to win her last game yesterday to qualify and her chances looked reasonably good, as her opponent, Edna Shatford (Daliington), had had only the one victory. However, Mrs Shatford emerged a clear winner, 25-17. Sadie Fauchelle (Coronation), who has a good record in her Nelson centre, was another surprise failure. She had three wins after three rounds, but was unable to add the fourth in her next three games. There were a number of close shaves in the final round and among those to just sneak through was the defending champion, Flo McKinnon (Whangarei). She got her fourth win, 16-14, against E. Eathome (Kurow), who did not have a win to her name. A last-round game which held much local interest was that between Alice Whiting (Woolston W.M.C.), who won the fours in Christchurch eight years ago, and Marjory Steele (Burnside). Both wanted the game to quality and it was Mrs Whiting who took it, 25-17. There was a meritorious Ejrformance from Eleanor uckley (Riccarton Women’s) in the last round. She began with three wins and then failed by one point against Olive Garratt (Papanui) when they resumed their rain-interrupted fourth round game yesterday morning. The 107 qualifiers are — E.
