Same five golfers
The Canterbury golf selectors have retained faith in the same five players who served the province so admirably at last year’s Freyberg Rose Bowl tournament in Dunedin.
That team of Jim Lapsley, John Williamson, John Sanders, Brent Paterson and Mark Street has been chosen to represent Canterbury at this year’s Southland invitational 72-hole teams’ stroke championship at Otatara on March 12 and 13. The reserves are James Angus and Paul Minifie, who was the leading junior at the
despite one disastrous round South Island under-21 teams’ event at Invercargill last week-end. Neither Lapsley nor Williamson figured in the finish of the Canterbury P.G.F. stroke championship at Waitikiri last week-end, and both were disappointed with their form, especially in light of the fact that they will be making their New Zealand debuts very soon. Williamson, who won the Canterbury title last year, was well down in the senior field with 316 — 32 shots worse than his winning total in 1982. Lapsley was somewhat better, but had rusty edges to his game. However, both are gifted, gritty golfers, and Williamson was the top individual when Canterbury prevailed by a stroke at Otatara last year. Sanders, the new Canterbury stroke champion, was a certain choice, and Paterson, in spite of one disastrous round at Waitikiri, and Street did enough last week-end to retain their places in the top five. Williamson, Lapsley and Paterson were members ol last year’s victorious Canterbury team in Invercargill Street and Sanders will take the places of Geoff. Saunders and Stephen Street.
