The Building By-laws require building permits to be obtained for most building activities, including building alterations and additions, structural repairs, garages, carports, garden sheds, glasshouses and such like, whether they be temporary or permanent. Certain structures such as buildings less than 5 square metres in area and less than 1.2 metres in height are exempt. Retaining walls less than 1.2 metres in height and timber fences less than 2.4 metres are also exempt. Swimming pools of 23,000 litres capacity (5000 gallons) or greater can only be installed pursuant to a building permit. Swimming pools must be fenced in accordance with the County By-law. Chimney permits are also required to be obtained for the installation of solid fuel heating appliances (e.g. coal and wood burning ranges, chip and space heaters, and pot-belly-type stoves, etc.). Installation in strict accordance with the By-laws and the manufacturer’s specifications is essential in the event of a future insurance claim. All residents and others within the County are also reminded that drainage and sanitary plumbing work can only be performed by registered tradesmen pursuant to permits.
