Prime cattle and vealers sell well

Prices for most types of good quality prime stock were steady at the Addington market yesterday. However, buyers showed little interest in light hoggets unsuited to the butchery trade. Old ewe values declined slightly but prime cattle and vealers had another good sale. Prime lambs Good quality butchers' lambs sold at prices fully firm with recent sales. The market contained many light works-type lambs, and several pens of unfinished lambs. Competition for lighter lambs was limited. The yarding was 1348. compared with 1476 last week. However, the yarding included many plain hoggets in which buyers showed little interest. Many sales were made at $l2 and some hoggets sold at $lO. Medium to plain hoggets were about $1 down compared with last week's sale. Quality was much better in the old ewe section, but prices still eased 80c. Many pens of ewes with good skins were offered.

The yarding was 2986, compared with 2739 last week.

Prime cattle had another good sale although the over-all quality of the stock was down compared with last week.

The drop in quality and the absence of outside competition tended to make selling slightly more difficult than last week. However, prices were steady and stock in top condition was in good demand, especially heavysteers.

Cows continued their fine run of sales.

Top price for the day was for an excellent quality Friesian steer sold on behaid of the Birdlings Children's Trust for $790. A heifer from R. C. Batchelor (Mount Somers) made $4OB and a Friesian cow from D. J. Keenan (Duvauchelle) sold for $430. The yarding was 433, compared with 529 last week. Fat pigs Values for fat pigs remained steady in spite of a drop in the

schedule. The yarding was small and there was good competition from the retail trade.

Good choppers were well sought and competition was strong on all heavy pigs. Many ?hoppers were unsuitable for trade purposes and fatteners were active.
